Let’s take a look at the two style choices… Natural and then Straight.
Natural Hair
We were born with natural hair (hence the term: natural), however we still don’t understand our natural hair. Natural hair requires ” care steps” to be taken in order to manage our “tresses”.
- You must cleanse and clarify with shampoo and stabilize with a protein and moisturizing conditioner, at least weekly, so that your scalp won’t be prone to disorders and your hair won’t become polluted.
- You must moisturize your hair in order to prevent a dehydrated hair and scalp.
- You must groom your hair each day no matter what “style choice” you make.

Natural hair with heated tools
Many women choose the option to thermally straighten or curl their hair. While this is a very viable option, many women forget that their hair is not naturally straight, causing so many of them to suffer with hair loss and other problems. Remember, when you change your hair from kinky to straight, you must protect and preserve it by following some simple rules:
Pressed/Flat Ironed Hair
- Only use heated tools on clean and conditioned hair.
- Always use a “Lisa Akbari’s Cool Down” https://lisaakbari.com/shop/cool-down-8oz/ when straightening your hair
- Do not use two “heat tools” flatten your hair in place, and sit under a dryer , and the use your “heated iron” of choice
- Always monitor the heated tool, ensuring the temperature stays appropriate for your hair texture meaning Strand SIZE
- For “Fine” hair strands, ensure that the temperature stays between 150 to max 250 depending the health of your hair.
- For “Medium” hair strands, ensure that the temperature stays between 300 to max 375 depending health of your hair.
- For “Coarse” hair strands, ensure that the temperature stays between 400 to max 450 depending health of your hair.
- Do not put oil on your hair, until after you have completed the “heated service” in order to seal in the moisture level.
Relaxed Hair , Permanent Wave, Colored Highlights, or even Lowlights
Remember to take care of your hair so it can stay beautiful and healthy.
- Never relax damaged hair or receive a relaxer if your scalp is damaged.
- Never allow less than 8 to 10 weeks time between relaxers.
- “Wet Set” your hair and sit under the dryer, however do not sit under the dryer more than 30 minutes for healthy hair, less for damaged hair to avoid dehydrating the scalp. Direct heated tools, such as flat irons should be your last choice in styling.

At the end of the day, we will always have strong opinions about women and their hair, but the choice is yours. Just remember: God made your hair and God makes no mistakes. Learn to respect and love your hair in its natural state, before you alter it.
NOTE: Whether you wear a relaxer, permanent wave, highlights, or lowlights, your scalp and hair will be hydrated and healthy.
