Episode 11, Part I: Ask the Hair Doctor July 12, 2011

In this episode of Ask the Hair Doctor, Lisa answers the following questions:

0:30 Hi, I'm so excited that I found you on Youtube. I am 23 months into my transition and I have been noticing that I have a ton of fairy knots on my ends in the back of my head. How do you get rid of them and how do you prevent them? I also remember you stating that wearing microbraids are not good, but what about wearing medium sized braids or extensions that are bigger than microbraids?

5:16 is rinsing the hair with water under the shower everyday damaging for the hair?

3 questions:
5:45 Is it true that the hair grows faster in the summer than the winter?
6:56 Is air drying a roller set healthier than sitting under a dryer?
8:40 Is there a healthier way to get relaxed hair straighter at the roots when roller setting than using heat?

10:40 Is using deep conditioners or rinse out conditioners that contain silicones good for the hair or should we use conditioners that are free of silicones. I like conditioners with silicone as it provides a lot of slip for detangling.

11:27 Does the conditioner have to have a certain ph? I know the ph for shampoo is 4.5 to 5.5, not sure if the same has to be for the clarifying shampoo, but does ph matter for the conditioner?

12:11 I've read that hair on average grows 1/4 to 1/2 an inch per month. I would like to know if it's possible to increase the rate of hair growth per month. If so, how?
